Following the continuing story of how, and where, franchises are being viewed as akin to employer / employee relationships (see my previous posts here, here, and here), yesterday's issue of the Convenience Store News has an interesting article on how convenience stores in particular are being affected by this trend. The story includes a brief discussion of the lawsuit by a group of state attorneys general against FedEx and its FedEx Ground service, as well as a discussion of the ongoing Kentucky lawsuit involving the franchisor of Subway, Doctors Associates, Inc., and its practice of using co-location agreements in convenience stores. The author (Joe Kefauver) argues that the recent trend may be due to the current budgetary woes faced by many states and a zeal by those states to find additional sources of revenue.
